The Architecture of Joy Week 1: Protecting Your Quiet Foundation

“In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.” ~ Psalm 5:3

There is so much wrapped up in that word expectantly. Throughout the Psalms, David repeatedly declares his trust in God as his rock, his bulwark, his high mountain, his valley, and the one who leads him beside still waters. God is everything to him.

When David says, “I wait expectantly,” he isn’t hoping for a maybe. He knows an answer is coming; he knows God will act on his request, and all he has to do is wait.

Beyond the To-Do List

If you want to cultivate a home filled with joy and quiet strength, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by where to begin. Most of us don’t need another ambitious project or a complete lifestyle makeover. What we really need is a firm, quiet foundation that holds us steady when life gets busy.

The Myth of the 5 AM Wake-Up Call

For years, we’ve been told that this foundation must be laid in the very early hours of the day, long before the sun rises or the household stirs. But if I am honest, during the years my kids were young—which spanned a large part of my young adult life—I was tired. A bone-weary tired. No conviction on earth could have persuaded me to rise at 5 AM to get a strict hour of quiet before my day started.

If you are in a season of exhaustion, please hear this grace: God does not require a 5 AM wake-up call to meet with you.

Gathering Quiet Moments in the Margins

Instead of fighting my exhaustion back then, I learned to use quiet moments wherever I could find them. The foundation of our day isn’t built on a rigid schedule; it is built in the pockets of peace we intentionally carve out.

And thankfully, it is so much easier to focus our minds today than it used to be. We don’t need a perfectly quiet, empty house to connect with the Lord. We have Bible apps right in our pockets. We can stream BBN (Bible Broadcasting Network) on our phones while we fold the laundry, and there are countless free Bible studies online that we can tap into whenever we have a spare ten minutes.

Meeting Him Where You Are

Your quiet foundation isn’t about checking off a spiritual task at a specific hour—it is an act of tethering your heart to His. Whenever your morning happens, whether it’s the moment you first open your eyes or a stolen quiet moment during a busy afternoon, bring Him your heart.

In our daily lives, we can usually only hold about 5% of what’s really going on in our minds to bring to the Lord. A simple prayer like, “Guide me through this day You’ve given me, help me make the right decisions, and help me walk on your path,” is enough. When we place our thoughts, plans, and gentle requests into His hands, we set the spiritual temperature for everything that follows.

If you want a home filled with joy and peace, start by protecting those quiet moments. Bring Him your weary heart, and wait expectantly for the grace He will give you for the hours ahead.

A Prayer for Quiet Moments

Lord,

Thank You for meeting me exactly where I am, – whether in the stillness of the early morning or in a stolen moment amidst a busy afternoon. When my body and mind are bone-weary, remind me that You do not demand a rigid schedule, but simply an open heart.

Help me to recognize and protect the quiet moments You provide today. Thank You for the tools that make it easier to fix my mind on Your word when my days feel full. Anchor my spirit in Your truth today, so that no matter what tasks or distractions come my way, I can move forward with a calm, patient, and joyful heart.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
