“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16
The Heart of the Matter
For years, many of us treated October 31st as a night to pull down the shades, turn off the porch light, and hide from the noise. Between the loud crowds, high sensory input, and chaotic energy outside, retreating felt like the only way to protect our peace
But as our friends at Living Our Priorities remind us through their annual Light Party, we don’t have to hide from the darkest night of the year—we can choose to be the light.
God created every single calendar day, including this one. Reclaiming October 31st isn’t about conforming to the world’s chaos; it’s about opening our hearts (and our thresholds) to share Christ’s love, hope, and peace in a way that honours our family’s unique capacity.
Shining Light Without the Overwhelm
Hosting a Light Party or standing out as a lighthouse in your neighborhood doesn’t mean pushing yourself into sensory burnout. You can be an intentional vessel of grace while still protecting your nervous system:
- Shine where you are comfortable: Whether you set up a simple table at the end of the driveway with bright warm lights, hand out treat bags with Scripture notes, or offer a prayer request box, focus on connection over perfection.
- Keep sensory boundaries in place: If loud doorbells or sudden knocks trigger anxiety or sensory stress for your household, step outside onto the porch or driveway instead. You control the environment and the volume.
- Focus on hospitality and prayer: Shift the atmosphere from fear to faith. Use the evening to pray over every neighbor, child, and family that crosses your path, treating your home as a sanctuary that shines out into the neighborhood.
When we shift our mindset from retreating to reclaiming, October 31st stops being a night of stress and becomes a joy-harvesting opportunity to point people directly to Jesus.
A Closing Prayer for Your Threshold
Lord, thank You that Your light shines in the darkest places, and the darkness cannot overcome it. Tonight, we ask that You make our home a lighthouse in our neighborhood. Give us hearts of hospitality, peace in our minds, and gentle strength to reflect Your warmth and love to everyone who passes by. Keep our dwelling safe and filled with Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
In Your Notebook
Before October 31st arrives, open your notebook and take 5 quiet minutes to write down:
- Your Boundary: What is one specific boundary or adjustment you need to make this yer to protect your household’s peace and nervous system?
- Your Prayer List: Jot down the names or descriptions of two or three neighbors or families who will pass by your home, and pray over them ahead of time.
