The Architecture of Joy Week 3: Scared Walls & Restful Boundaries

“Six days you shall labor and do all your work: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God…” ~ Exodus 20:9-10

The Temptation of the Unfinished List

When we are actively working to care for our homes and our families, it can feel almost impossible to stop. There is always one more load of laundry waiting to be folded. One more email needing a response. Or one more home project calling for our attention. We tell ourselves we’ll rest as soon as everything is finished—but in a home, the work is never truly finished.

if we don’t build intentional walls around our rest, work will naturally expand to fill every open space in our week.

Rest as an Act of Trust

In the Old Testament, God didn’t just suggest rest; He commanded it. He knew our human tendency to keep striving, to tie our worth to our productivity, and to believe that everything will fall apart if we pause.

Setting aside dedicated time for prayer, family, and genuine rest isn’t a luxury or a reward for getting everything done. It is a boundary that protects our souls.

When we step away from our weekly tasks—whether that’s guarding a Thursday for prayer and family or keeping Friday as a clear off-day—we are making a quiet declaration: God is in control, and the world can run without my labor for a little while.

Guarding the Perimeter

Creating sacred walls doesn’t require a rigid, legalistic set of rules. It simply means recognizing what drains your spirit and having the courage to close the door on it for the day.

It might mean stepping away from your phone, leaving the laundry basket in the hall until tomorrow, or saying a polite “no” to outside commitments so your home can be a refuge.

When we guard our restful days, we give our hearts room to breathe. Inside these walls, we create a quiet space for our souls. It gives joy a place to flourish instead of being crowded out by constant doing.

If you want your home to be a sanctuary, don’t be afraid to build restful boundaries. Work faithfully when it is time to work, but when it is time to rest, step inside those sacred walls and trust Him with the rest.

A Prayer for Restful Boundaries

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of rest and for Your command to pause. You know how easily my mind gets caught up in the endless loop of tasks, chores and responsibilities. Grant me the faith to set down my work, even when the list isn’t completely finished.

Give me the wisdom and courage to guard our family’s quiet spaces and off days. Help me to trust that You are sustaining my home, my family, and my life while I rest. May these restful times bring true refreshment to our spirits and draw us closer to You and to one another.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
