Why You Need to Stop Muddling and Choose Real Grace

Have you ever caught yourself trying to catch your breath in the middle of an ordinary morning?

Lately, I found myself doing just that. My mind was spinning with the endless, silent background noise of a busy life—the lists, the mental reminders, the constant worry of “What will I forget next?”

For the longest time, I called those heavy, disorganized days my “muddle days.” They were the days where I felt like I was just barely keeping my head above water, frantically trying to catch up on chores, admin, and life, while wearing myself out in the process.

But this week, I made a “decide once” decision: I do not muddle anymore. Instead, I take days off!

Shifting the Language of Our Days

There is so much power in the words we use to describe our lives. When we tell ourselves we are just “muddling through,” we subconsciously accept a state of chaotic survival. We carry the guilt of what we should be doing, even on our days off.

But when we actively choose to rename those spaces as intentional rest, everything shifts.

  • Grace: Letting go of the impossible, “glossy magazine” standards of a picture-perfect home or schedule. It means giving ourselves permission to let the laundry wait (or celebrating when it’s surprisingly done!) and recognizing that our worth isn’t tied to constant productivity.
  • Peace: Actively protecting our quiet spaces. It’s choosing to step away from the noise to tend the garden, watch the birds, or simply sit in a quiet room and breathe.
  • Reality: Embracing the authentic, beautiful, and sometimes messy reality of our homes. A real home has dishes, unfinished projects, and people who need quiet moments to reset.

Give Yourself Permission to Breathe

If you are reading this today and finding yourself trying to catch your breath, let this be your gentle reminder. You do not have to carry it all today. You don’t have to muddle through a stressful week just to prove you can handle it.

Step back. Take a deep breath. And let grace cover the unfinished spaces. Seek a moment of true peace. Anchor yourself in the quiet reality of Jesus love and acceptance of us, just as we are.
