Boxing with Chaos: How to Win an Unpredictable ADHD Day

This is a story of how I survived my Monday going sideways.

Life with ADHD is a lot, but it is never boring!

My Monday morning started out like most others, coffee, ionized water, food, devotions, prayer, feed cats, feed and let out hens. And making a plan for my day – which was to bake.

But yesterday had other ideas. My plan didn’t match my reality. Again.

It was Dumpster Day – a fact I slightly overlooked. Dumpster Day is when my daughter may or may not be called into work, to work her cleaning magic on the back door workings of our local supermarket.

On this Monday she was and while she was gone, it was time to make like a boxer and Pivot! I shifted gears and focused in on a very necessary, albeit unpleasant cleaning job here at home.

The “ADHD Schedule” Shift

Then, there was breakfast for my husband before his workday started. Now we don’t live a standard American routine like I grew up with – you know,

  • up at 6,
  • breakfast at 7,
  • lunch at noon,
  • supper by 6.

I imagine our schedule is very much an ADHD schedule:

  • breakfast at noon,
  • lunch at 5,
  • supper at 9:30.

Here is where my fancy footwork really started. My husband started at 2:00, but he has that “ADHD-let-me-get-there-early” drive so he can adjust to the day. So, we drop him off at 1:00 – just as my daughter finishes up her shift. I pick her up and we return home.

The Mid-Day Pass-Off

Once at home my footwork is still pivoting. I whip up a chicken and greens salad for my husband’s lunch, complete with homemade dressing. Then we change clothes, load up and head back toward Publix to bring him his meal before our trip to Sam’s Club.

It was a beautiful bit of boxing footwork. I pulled into the parking lot, rolled up to the front and there he was, my husband, walking right out the front door.

Perfect timing! How often does that happen with ADHD?

We passed off his lunch, said “I love you” and were on our way to Chick-fil-A for the daughter’s lunch.

The Surprise Warehouse Trip

Going to Sam’s is always a good drive and then the walk will surely get your step count up. I need to explain here that going to Sam’s Club was not in my plans – It is a longer drive that my husband usually makes, and I’m happy to let him. But I persevered and we made it through the warehouse and back home with no mishaps.

Thank you, Lord for safe travel.

We were back home by 6 and I was tired. But my daughter was restless. So after squeaking some down time out of the evening, we left at 8:30 to pick Father up.

This allowed us to take another walk. Which is how I got 2.5 miles walked in my day. That’s a big deal for me. Being an introvert, I’m happy to spend a whole day at home puttering around.

This is a very normal day in my life. A change of plans is a normal part of living with their ADHD and Turner Syndrome.
